Work It Wednesday! Torrance Senior's Life Takes Flight

Work It Wednesday!

Adia In-Home Care has a number of clients who continue to work while enjoying semi-retirement. For Work It Wednesday! we will be highlighting seniors who keep busy with work well into their 70s, 80s, and yes, even 90s, proving that age really is just a number.

Louis Zamperini, Age 94

Happy Early Birthday! Louis Turns 95 Tomorrow!!!

Louis in Torrance

A juvenile delinquent in his hometown of Torrance, California, Louis Zamperini became a world famous track sensation, competing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics when only a teenager. After World War II began, he suspended his running career and became an Army Air Corps bombardier, surviving several harrowing combat missions flown out of his base in Hawaii. On May 27, 1943, Zamperini’s bomber crashed in the Pacific, leaving Zamperini and two other survivors stranded on a raft surrounded by sharks.

In 1998, the Olympic Winter Games were held in Nagano, Japan, just outside the town where Louis had been held captive. The people of Nagano asked Louis to carry the Olympic flame as part of the torch relay, and the CBS created a 45-minute feature about Louis’ life, that aired during the telecast of the Closing Ceremony.

This story and the accompanying interview reignited interest in Louis’ life, eventually leading Laura Hillenbrand, (the Pulitzer Prize winning author of “Seabiscuit”) to document Louis’ life in her latest book, “Unbroken.”

Today, at 94 years of age, Louis is still spry and full of life. He lectures to audiences across the globe on how to deal with stress, the meaning of Olympism and the freedom he found through a personal relationship with God.
