Work It Wednesday! Helen Gurley Brown Working into Her 80s
Work It Wednesday!
Adia In-Home Care has a number of clients who continue to work while enjoying semi-retirement. For Work It Wednesday! we will be highlighting seniors who keep busy with work well into their 70s, 80s, and yes, even 90s, proving that age really is just a number.
Helen Gurley Brown, 89

Not only is Helen Gurley Brown, editor of Cosmopolitan from 1965 to 1997, still widely known for her bestselling book, Sex and the Single Girl, and its sequel, Sex and the New Single Girl, published in 1970, but she insists that its pre-feminist message remains as apt today as when she first declared it.
"All the suggestions about pleasing men are as viable as ever," says Brown, 83. "Whatever age you are, you should be flattering to a man about the way he looks."
In September, 2008, she was named the 13th most powerful American over the age of 80 by Slate magazine. After more than 50 years of marriage, her husband David Brown died at age 93 on February 1, 2010. David Brown was the producer of such films as Jaws and Chocolat.
Since retiring as Cosmo's editor for 32 years, she became Hearst's International Editor for all 59 international editions of Cosmo; a position she holds today.
On January 30th, she announced that she is donating $30 million dollars to building the bicoastal David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia and Stanford universities in honor of her late husband, an alumnus of both schools.
